The U-2 plane incident was a giant Cold War tension because it was a misunderstanding and a confusing web of lies. The CIA made a secret flight over the Soviet Union with the U-2 plane to take pictures. The Soviet Union saw the plane and asked the United States government, they denied the plane's purpose and mission. Eisenhower wanted to discontinue the U-2 flights, but the flights still continued. Francis Gary Powers made one last flight on May 1, 1960. The Soviet Union saw this plane and shot it down. Powers was taken prisoner. Eisenhower took full responsibility and the tension grew.
